UNSW Professor becomes member of American Academy

An ABC article reported the news that UNSW professor Michelle Simmons became a member of the American Academy. She “pioneered a radical technology for making electronic devices atom by atom in silicon,” the ABC said. The device is made in a UNSW lab. Simmons is also a part of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology at UNSW and is an ARC Laureate Fellow.

If there was a student-run, independent newspaper:

The ABC story said Simmons did not even know she was nominated, likely by a colleague or student. A student-run, independent paper on campus could help fill in this story and tell the tale of Simmons’ success with her students. This would call for a short news brief and a profile on Simmons. As a reader of this story, this would be a great way to learn about the success going on at UNSW and find out a little more about a top professor at the university.
